Welfare Mack Daddy and the Section 8 Escorts was a funk hip hop band started by Morri Hartgraves when he was in the ninth grade. Hartgraves’s entered the band in the school talent show. When Hartgraves began singing his song “Gimme Some Good Dope I Can O.D. On,” the fourteen year old Hartgraves was promptly removed from the stage. Hartgraves’ friends got the band and Hartgraves' stand-up comedy routine to perform at the 2401 North Lillie Projects, Mr. Fats’ Soul Mart, the Escapade Club, and the Dashiki Club. The following years Hartgraves took the band on a cross country housing projects tour. One stint got him from San Angelo to Chicago and Detroit. Another tour got him from San Angelo to New Orleans, Atlanta, and parts of Florida. On each tour the band totally ran out of money. The band was often tipped in food stamps and food stamp tokens. This at least provided the band with junk food from convenient stores. While playing with this band Hartgraves frequently changed the name of the band. Some of these band names included:
A$AP Food Stamp
A$AP SNAP
The Welfare Pimp
